The runway maths
Runway is the number of months your cash covers the gap between what you spend and what comes in:
- Net burn = monthly burn minus monthly revenue
- Runway = cash in the bank ÷ net burn
- Months a raise adds = the raise ÷ net burn
For example, $600,000 in the bank against a $60,000 burn and $15,000 of revenue is a net burn of $45,000, which lasts 13.3 months. When you add monthly growth, revenue rises each month and the calculator counts the months one by one instead, so the net burn shrinks as you go.
Reading the answer
Most investors expect a round to take months from the first meeting to money in the bank, so plan the raise while the runway still has room. The table shows the month the cash runs out under today's plan and with the raise beside it. If revenue overtakes the burn, the calculator says so instead of counting down.
Then stretch it
Runway grows two ways: more cash or a lower burn. The Startup hub keeps both in view, with investors ranked against your round, 1,200+ ways to apply with a tracker and perks that lower what you spend. Work out what a SAFE costs you in ownership with the SAFE and dilution calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How is runway calculated?
Divide the cash in the bank by your net burn, which is your monthly burn minus your monthly revenue. With revenue growth switched on, the calculator counts month by month, because the net burn shrinks as revenue grows.
What counts as burn?
Everything that leaves the bank in a month: salaries, rent, tools, marketing and any loan repayments. Use gross spend, and put what comes in under revenue.
How far does a raise extend my runway?
At flat revenue, by the raise divided by your net burn. The calculator counts the raise as arriving today, so plan the round early enough for the money to land before your own runway ends.
What if revenue already covers my burn?
Then your cash does not run out at these numbers, and the calculator says so instead of counting down.
Which currencies does it use?
SAR, AED, QAR and USD. Switching converts your figures at the dollar pegs (3.75 SAR, 3.6725 AED, 3.64 QAR), so the months never change with the currency.
Does the runway calculator store or send what I type?
No. The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored, sent or logged.
